How to Update SMTP Settings

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used to send outgoing emails. If emails are not sending correctly, updating the SMTP server, port, encryption, or authentication settings may resolve the issue.

This article explains how to update SMTP settings when configuring an email account in an email client or application.

Information You Will Need

Before updating your settings, make sure you have:

  • Your email address.
  • Your email account password
  • SMTP/Outgoing Mail Server hostname.
  • SMTP port number
  • Encryption/Security type

Your hosting provider should provide the correct SMTP server details.

Steps to Update SMTP Settings

Steps 1: Open Your Email Account Settings
  1. Open the email application or device settings.
  2. Select the email account you want to update.
  3. Open Account Settings or Mail Settings.
  4. Look for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
 
Step 2: Update the SMTP Server

Enter the SMTP server/hostname provided by your hosting provider.

For example:

Outgoing Mail server:

mail.yourdomain.com

Replace the example hostname with the SMTP server provided for your email.
Step 3: Update the SMTP Port

Select the appropriate SMTP port provided by your hosting provider.

 Common SMTP ports include:
  • 587 - SMTP with STARTLS
  • 465 - SMTP with SSL/TLS
  • 25 - Standard SMTP port, which may be restricted by some networks or hosting providers.

Use the port recommended by your hosting provider.

 
Step 4: Enable Authentication

Make sure SMTP Authentication is enabled if required.

Use:

  • Username: Your full email address
  • Password: Your email account password.

For example:

name@yourdomain.com

 
Step 5: Select the Security Type

Choose the security/encryption option that matches your hosting provider's requirements

 
Step 6: Save the Settings
  1. Save the updated SMTP settings.
  2. Close the account settings.
  3. Send a test email to confirm that outgoing email is working.
